“Three, two, one, go!”Mei Li presses the record button.

The energetic man on screen was once a TV producer in Zimbabwe and is now an international student at Guizhou Communications Polytechnic University. From telling African stories to exploring Guizhou culture, the camera has been his way of seeing the world. This time, his lens focuses on the landscapes of southwest Guizhou.

“In my hometown, I record African stories. Here, I want to tell Guizhou’s stories in my own way,”Mei Li says.

Winter sunlight falls on a Bouyei village surrounded by the Wanfenglin peaks, with layered mountains afar and cooking smoke nearby. Holding the heavy mallet to pound glutinous rice, Mei Li feels its weight with curiosity. Guided by villagers’rhythmic chants, he quickly finds the beat.

“It’s all about teamwork,”he says with a laugh, wiping sweat from his forehead.“Even without a shared language, the joy of working together is universal.”The freshly made rice cake, warm and sweet with soybean flour, leaves him with a vivid memory of Guizhou’s winter warmth.

In a tie-dye workshop filled with natural fragrances, poetic blues and whites bloom in dye vats deep within the Bouyei village. Mei Li carefully folds, ties, and dips the fabric. As the cloth slowly unfolds in water and patterns emerge, he says in delight,“The magic of tie-dye is that you never know how it will turn out.”

Standing on the viewing platform of the Huajiang Canyon Bridge, with a 600-meter-deep chasm below and a steel arc of human ingenuity before him, Mei Li holds his breath.“I saw many videos of the‘world’s highest bridge’online before coming, but being here is completely different,”he admits. To him, the bridge not only shortens distances but also shows humanity’s determination to overcome extreme challenges.

From steaming rice cakes to majestic bridges, Mei Li’s camera captures far more than scenery—it records how a young man from afar measures the land with his steps, experiences it with his hands, and connects with it through his heart.
